Specifically created for developmental reading students, MyReadingLab is the first online application that combines diagnostics, practice exercises, tests and powerful assessment to help improve student reading skills and reading level.
Student reading skills are improved through a mastery-based format of practice exercises. Exercises include objective-based questions, open-ended questions, short answer questions, combined skills exercises and more.
Student reading level is assessed through the Lexile framework (www.lexile.com), the most widely adopted reading measure in use today. The Lexile Framework measures both reader ability and text difficulty on the same scale, called the Lexile scale. Based on a carefully developed diagnostic, students are assigned an initial Lexile number. Then, using a combination of “cloze” questions ( taking and passing a cloze exercise is dependent on a person's ability to utilize context and knowledge of vocabulary in order to identify the correct words that belong in deleted passages of a text) and combined skills exercises, MyReadingLab allows students to increase their Lexile number and realize their progress over time. This approach allows instructors to manage reading comprehension and encourage reader progress using MyReadingLab.
The result of combining reading skills and reading level measurement is a personalized study plan for each student and quantifiable data that help instructors measure individual student progress.
The new MyReadingLab is the result of the collaboration of two premier publishers: Longman and Prentice Hall. A student access code for the new MyReadingLab will now come inside every new reading textbook that a student purchases from either of these publishing houses.
MyReadingLab is available in 4 different levels of difficulty. Please consult with your sales representative as to which level is right for your students. Levels available:

Assessment
Diagnose students in both reading skill mastery and/or reading level with prepared pre- and post-tests.
Reading Skill diagnostic pre- and post-tests, updated from the best selling multimedia tutorial Reading Road Trip , assess students' mastery of fifteen critical reading skills.
Reading Level diagnostic allows instructors to leverage the Lexile Framework, the most widely adopted reading measure in use today. Using MyReadingLab, instructors can accurately assess students' reading level and provide practice to help them improve. Once a reading level is established through diagnostic testing, students are assigned a level (in the form of a Lexile number) and then offered a unique set of exercises (cloze exercises) designed to help them improve their reading level through practice. This allows instructors and students to monitor reading level progress throughout the course. For more information on Lexiles and MetaMetrics visit www.lexile.com.
Comprehensive Gradebook Tracking
Manage online homework, in-class activities, or lab assignments with quizzes and tests that are automatically graded, allowing you to spend less time preparing assignments and grading -- and more time teaching.
Gradebook reports are available for students and instructors. Instructors can monitor an individual student's progress or the performance of an entire class.
Alerts are generated for instructors when students have not achieved mastery in a skill after extensive practice, if student reading level is below an established benchmark, or if a student has not completed work in the program. Alerts provide instructors with the information they need to work effectively with each individual student.
Time on Task reports how much time a student has spent completing a specific exercise.
Online course content management tools
MyReadingLab courses are filled with a wealth of content for student practice with reading skill and reading level. Everything you need to deliver a complete online course is there when you adopt a MyReadingLab course, but you can easily add or remove existing content. You can also customize your MyReadingLab course, including the type and order or readings. Instructors can also set their preferred mastery level for individual exercise sets.
Copy or link courses
If you've spent time customizing your MyReadingLab course and want to use the same course next semester, you can copy your existing course and preserve all your customizations. You can also let other instructors copy your course. To coordinate across multiple sections of the same course, you can set up a course link, where assignments in the "coordinator" course automatically appear in the affiliated "member" courses. This option is ideal for departments that want to maintain a standardized syllabus across multiple sections taught by different instructors.

Engaging readings
The new MyReadingLab readings are pulled from a combination of textbook and popular sources for optimal student interest.
Readings provided in the reading skills practice area are organized around a popular geographic theme. Skill areas are connected to locations throughout the US . Photos, points of interest, and readings all reflect a particular location.
Readings provided in the reading level practice area are organized by topic and delivered based on their reading level measurement. Students can choose from the readings provided based on their personal interests. There are two types of exercises under each topic area — discrete skill practice (cloze questions) and combined skill practice. Reading level exercises allow students to increase their reading level over time.
Study Plan for self-paced learning
The Study Plan is the heart of the site where all the student activities and tests are found. The order of topics found in the study plan can be customized by taking the diagnostic test at the beginning of the course. The topic order changes according to their individual needs.
