Instructor Impressions: Student Learning Path

"Students feel such a sense of achievement using MyReadingLab," says Proessor Valerie Bolaris. Hear what these three instructors have to say about MyReadingLab—how it has helped them and their students.

“I believe that if students use MyReadingLab and do the work with a sincere desire to learn and improve their comprehension, they will see progress. I've seen evidence of this in students who were diligent about their learning and paid attention to the feedback that this program offers. MyReadingLab provides them with a wide variety of learning experiences and the opportunity for positive growth and development of specific reading skills, of overall comprehension, and vocabulary enhancement. MyReadingLab is the closest thing to a personal reading tutor that I have found.”
— Corinne Fennessy, Professor of Reading, Valencia Community College

“We've been using MyReadingLab in our lab curriculum for the past four semesters, and as someone who works in the lab environment, I am pleased with how easy MyReadingLab is to learn by both instructors new to the lab and the students. As a classroom instructor, I am also excited to find a program that supplements my curriculum student learning outcomes, which require the teaching and acquisition of reading strategies. Our students are thriving under this program in terms metacognative engagement and overall comprehension, and the data we’ve collected supports these findings.”
— Pamela Huntington, English / Reading Professor, Merced College

“MyReadingLab allows students to work at their own pace on lessons that strengthen their reading ability. The lessons are modeled, provide students with additional practice, and are challenging.”
— Susanne Picchi, Associate Professor of Reading, Joliet Junior College

“MyReadingLab has become an indispensible component in my college reading classes at San Diego Mesa College. My students finally have an online program that provides them with a rich variety of reading materials in both skills and reading level. The gradebook page is very useful for students to keep track of their progress. What I really value is the final data in the gradebook page at the end of the semester.  There is a strong correlation between completion of MyReadingLab work and passing the course.”
— Marilynn Schenk, Professor, English/Reading, San Diego Mesa College

“MyReadingLab has allowed students to gain confidence in their ability to read and comprehend the text.”
— Bernadine Skowronski, Instructor, Somerset Community College

“I began using MyReadingLab when I was looking for an on-line practice of reading strategies for my students.  I like MyReadingLab because I am able to choose the strategies my students use and the mastery score they must achieve. Having the students take the Lexile and the diagnostic pre-test is a bonus of this program.”
— Michael Vensel, Assistant Professor, Miami-Dade College - Kendall

“MyReadingLab is a powerful tool for my face-to-face and distance learning classes. The diagnostic pre-tests alert me to students’ strengths and weaknesses, allow me to direct students in an individualized manner, and ensure students are reading passages at the appropriate reading levels. In addition, the review materials provide in-depth instructional content with audio and visual components to accommodate individual learning styles. I can upload my own files to supplement or direct student learning, and built-in progress graphs allow students to actually see their improvement from activity to activity. It’s a model program that results in student success.”
— Jacquelyn Warmsley, Asst. Professor of Reading, Tarrant County College

“MyReadingLab gives both student and instructor accountability and a concrete measure of time and progress. Students like when they know what they need to do and how they are progressing. I like that students have the option to work on their schedule and not have accessibility issues.”
— Vicci Fox, Instructor, Pima Community College

“Pearson's MyWritingLab and MyReadingLab have given my students to opportunity to individually tailor aspects of their reading and writing courses to their abilities, while challenging them to increase proficiency. What my students love about MyLabs is the chance to work on concepts at their own pace and receive immediate feedback. As an instructor who teaches 11-week terms, this immediate feedback and individualized study has significant benefits to the way I pace my courses.
— Adon Arnett, Instructor, Portland Community College

“MyLabs are an excellent tool for instructors. They supplement instruction and provide students with the ease of review and practice at their pace. Students tend to like the control they feel when working at their own pace.”
— Maria Johnson, Faculty, DeKalb Technical College

“MyReadingLab and MyWritingLab have really increased success in my classroom for the students who finish their labs. My students really like the MyLabs because they feel they are playing an active role in their learning. They get immediate feedback instead of waiting until the next class session for me to grade and pass back their papers. MyLabs provide a concrete example for the student who is a visual learner.”
— Bobbie Egloff, Adjunct Faculty, Ivy Tech Community College

“The best features offered in the MyLab products are the review materials. If students are absent the day I cover a new concept, they can log on, read the lesson, and watch the videos. For online students, the review materials lighten some of the students' burden of teaching themselves the material.  For nontraditional students, MyLabs become a less intimidating way to build technology into their new academic program.”
— Maggie Brown, Lead instructor, developmental studies English and reading, Lenoir Community College

"It sometimes takes a super heroic effort to get students to write better but with the help of MyLabs, students can take control of their learning and improve their writing. All of the composition MyLabs are great for allowing students to work on problem areas at their own pace. The Recall and Apply really give students the chance to not only see what they know about a topic but more importantly to put it into practice by detecting errors and then applying editing and writing skills. The video tutorials are great to introduce topics to students. Today's students rely on the Internet. They want to have access to items at a click of a button. They also want immediate feedback that an instructor may not always be able to provide. So between the active learning strategies and the MyLabs students can improve their writing"
— Kennette Crockett, Instructor, Harold Washington College
